Why Growing Soil Is Single-Use for Microgreens

Coir discs and other growing soils should not be reused for growing microgreens

Coconut coir and potting mixes are excellent growing media for microgreensโ€”but only for one growing cycle. Reusing it significantly increases the risk of contamination from microorganisms that are already present in normal home environments.

1. Homes are full of microscopic life

Even the cleanest homes contain:

  • Mold spores (floating in the air)
  • Fungal spores
  • Bacteria
  • Yeasts

These microbes settle naturally onto:

  • Soil surfaces
  • Seeds
  • Trays
  • Your hands, tools, and countertops

You donโ€™t see themโ€”but theyโ€™re always there.


2. Growing microgreens right creates the perfect environment for growth- for more than microgreens

Microgreens are grown in conditions that microbes love:

  • Warm temperatures
  • Constant moisture
  • High humidity
  • Dense plant spacing
  • No airflow at the soil surface

These conditions donโ€™t just grow plantsโ€”they also activate dormant spores that land in the growing medium.


3. Used soil becomes a microbial โ€œstarter cultureโ€

After one growth cycle, soil contains:

  • Root exudates (sugars released by plant roots)
  • Dead root material
  • Seed hull fragments
  • Moist organic matter

This leftover material becomes food for microbes. When reused, youโ€™re no longer starting with a neutral mediumโ€”youโ€™re starting with one that already supports biological growth.



4. Microgreens have no time to recover

Unlike houseplants or garden crops:

  • Microgreens grow very fast (7โ€“14 days)
  • They have minimal root systems
  • They are harvested young

If contamination appears, thereโ€™s no recovery window. Problems like:

  • Mold growth
  • Damping-off
  • Sour or musty odors

can ruin the entire tray within 24โ€“48 hours.


5. Reusing coir discs or other soil increases food-safety risk

Microgreens are eaten:

  • Raw
  • Whole
  • Often without washing

Reusing soil increases the chance of growing microbes you donโ€™t want near food, especially in a home setting where sterility cannot be controlled.


6. Drying does not make soil sterile

A common misconception is:

โ€œIf I let the coir dry out, it should be fine.โ€

In reality:

  • Many molds and bacteria form dormant spores
  • Spores can survive drying for months or years
  • As soon as moisture returns, they reactivate

Re-wetting the used coir essentially reawakens whatever settled there before.

7. Can Coco Coir Be Heat-Pasteurized and Reused?

Some growers ask whether heat pasteurizing coco coir makes it safe to reuse. While heat treatment can reduce microbial load, it comes with important limitationsโ€”especially for microgreens grown at home.

What heat pasteurization does

Heat pasteurization typically involves:

Heating moist coir to 180ยฐF (82ยฐC) and holding that temperature for 30 minutes

This process can:

  • Kill many active bacteria and fungi
  • Reduce mold growth initially

It does not create a sterile growing medium.

What heat pasteurization does not do

Even when done correctly, heat pasteurization:

  • Does not eliminate all spores (many survive heat)
  • Does not remove toxins already produced by molds

Practical and safety considerations

For home growers and classrooms, heat pasteurizing coir also:

  • Requires precise temperature control
  • Risks uneven heating (cold spots = surviving microbes)
  • Adds time, equipment, and handling steps
  • Increases the chance of accidental re-contamination

At that point, the process costs more effort than fresh coir, with less reliability.


The Mighty Microgreen recommendation

While heat pasteurization may be used in some controlled horticultural systems, we do not recommend reusing coco coir or other soil for microgreens, even if heat-treated.

For microgreens:

  • Fresh coir is inexpensive
  • Results are more consistent
  • Food-safety risk is lower
  • Success rates are higher

A clean start is simpler, safer, and more reliable.

Bottom line

Coir soil is recommended for single-use for microgreens because:

  • Homes naturally contain mold and bacteria
  • Used coir holds moisture, nutrients, and spores
  • Drying does not eliminate contamination
  • Food safety matters with raw crops

Fresh coir = clean start.
Reused coir = unnecessary risk.

So, what to do with the used coir? Put it in the compost!

If you do not have a compost, throw it under a bush or tree, or dig it into the outside garden to decompose and give it’s nutrients to other plants.
